I met a young man the other day (no honestly, I’m old enough to be his mum), and he was very nervous about getting into networking. “But how do you network?” he asked. It really is simple, I said, you just do it.
Having recently returned to my business I’ve just started networking again and I realised it’s one of the things I enjoy most. I’m going to try out several but the evening event I went to last week, with Word Gets Around Networking, was great.
There was a brief and really informative talk on the Cloud, which I hadn’t thought I’d need or be interested in. In fact I found it extremely interesting and realised it would be excellent for backing up my work.
Networking’s fun because you just don’t know who you’ll meet. It may or may not lead to business but that’s not the point. And if you grasp too hard at that aspect, it just slips away.
For me the point is making those connections, finding out about people, getting to know them, seeing what they do. It may lead to new work, it may lead to new associations, or to you being able to put people in touch with each other. It may lead to nothing but a pleasant few hours.
Now which network group shall I try next time? Perhaps a breakfast one - but not too early...
